Category: Financial Clutter

I love entrepreneurs. Their ability to build something from the ground up. Their impact on commerce and civic liberty.

The fire in their eyes, their unabated drive and determination are contagious. Their passion lights their way. There’s an excitement about the future that propels them forward.

I can’t help but get hopeful with them, wanting to see their big dreams become a reality.

So when I see a fellow entrepreneur struggle to find focus, drive and clarity in her business, it breaks my heart. I know without that, she won’t gain the momentum necessary to see the vision through. Without that, she’ll lose hope.

I immediately want to come to the rescue and offer guidance on how to remove the blocks.

When clarity eludes an entrepreneur, the fire goes out, the gusto fades. Discouragement and despair loom. Which is why we see so many businesses fail in their first 3 years. And why business partners disagree on vision and purpose. And why customers start shopping elsewhere.

It’s much better for the entrepreneur on the other side of confusion. It’s much better to be clear.

Have you lost vision and clarity for your business? Are you stuck in overwhelm and overload? Are you looking to get inspired again?

If so, below are 4 reasons–a.k.a. typical, widespread entrepreneur habits–you’re not experiencing clarity in your business right now.

When does stuff become clutter? When does what you own become more of a burden than a blessing? When does the disarray deserved to be disposed?

You can’t stop thinking about it. You’re stressed. You’re disorganized. Yet, you keep buying, stockpiling, hoarding…

Clearly, it’s not just the stuff that’s bothering you.

The stuff you see is only part of the mess. There’s stuff underneath the stuff.

Clutter is crafty and contagious. It pervades first our minds, then our bodies, hearts and homes. It seeps into our calendars, offices, careers and bank accounts.

Your mind is the first to get cluttered before you ever see the repercussions in your living space.

Can you catch it before it gets out of hand? Before it becomes debilitating?

Let’s find out how to tell when stuff becomes clutter.

Day 1. What’s in the forecast for your new year?

You might want to take a second to think about your answer to that question. It’s in your power to create, mold, fashion and shape the next 365 days into whatever you want.*

You have 12 months staring you in the face, what are you going to do with them?

It’s worth being reflective and introspective here because your quality of life depends on your attention to it. If you remain oblivious to your life experience and neglectful of your ability to set course after what you want, then you’re destined to be prey to everyone’s agendas but your own.

The quality of your life experience depends on where your attention is. Abundance or lack? Clarity or confusion? Freedom or fear?

Clearing space in the mind is how the successful remain nimble and stealthy. It is how they have the room for new information, new ideas and new insight. These mental pockets of nothingness open us up to the creative stream of consciousness.

Thinking clearly equates to thinking creatively. When we hit writer’s block on an article or feel uninspired about our work, it’s because we haven’t given ourselves time away from it. We need that emptiness to usher in the new and refine the old.

And if we never take time away from the hustle and grind of our careers, all else in our lives suffers. Our relationships, our health, our energy and our happiness.

Yet, all too often, we business owners scramble from client to client, wearing too many hats, overloading our calendars with too many appointments, and getting pulled in too many directions. At this pace, our minds don’t shut off and our feet don’t stop pushing 100 miles per hour.

Clutter is that chaos.

We all know firsthand the havoc stress wreaks on our bodies. We can definitely feel it. The headfog, the fatigue, the body aches, the eyestrain, the overwhelm. It slowly creeps in and suffocates us. Next thing we know, we’re yelling out the window at taxi cabs, sending angry emails, and bringing the bitch stare back.

Then add a cluttered home or office to the mix, and you have yourself a bonafide hellhole.

Under all that turmoil is clutter. Mental cutter; because stress is born from the inside—in our heads. Same place where clutter gets its start. Two peas in a pod, how cute.

I’m always reading books about clearing clutter and creating space. It’s good research.

I recently finished the book, Unstuff Your Life: Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good, by Andrew J. Mellen and it left me with lots of action steps to clear clutter. (Read my review of the book on Goodreads.) But in this case, I’m focused on the part about clearing digital clutter. And for good reason.

Mellen writes,

“In the United States alone, more than $650 billion a year in productivity is lost because of unnecessary interruptions, predominantly mundane matters, according to Basex, a leading knowledge economy research and advisory firm. The firm states that a large part of that $650 is the result of time lost recovering from interruptions and trying to refocus on work.”

Not only is it messy, digital clutter is a huge distraction.

Imagine running around the house looking for your keys when you’re already late for work. That’s you, too, when scrambling to find documents, spreadsheets and other files before you can get down to business.

When we think of something and anything, long enough, it becomes a belief. But just because we believe something doesn’t make it real. It just makes it our belief. An arbitrary thought pattern until you tell yourself something new to believe. My belief can conflict with your belief and your belief can conflict with my belief, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. It won’t even matter either way. Why fight over beliefs when they are just what we habitually told ourselves? I can just as quickly change my belief to match your belief and vice versa.

Who began to put so much meaning on it in the first place?

We did.

We became identified with these beliefs.
