Tag: declutter your mind

Spring is the perfect time to open the windows and let fresh air move out the stagnant winter air. It’s time to watch the buds, blossoms and blooms all open to receive. The greens get greener, the browns browner, the blues bluer.

I love spring. It’s a perfect time to awaken to freshness.

Use this change in seasons as a beautiful reminder to mind your mind, and let in some fresh air. To open up, pull out the weeds, plant new seeds, and nurture the growth.

Just like nature awakens to a new, crisp, sunny day, let spring serve as an example to awaken from within. Tara Brach says, “We need to awaken to the constructs of the mind.” See what you’ve been storing in there this past winter (the beliefs, the stories…) and clear it out.

Don’t neglect the mind. Let it be your starting point for spring cleaning.

“I can’t focus, my mind’s all over the place!” If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say this to me, I’d be rich. I hear friends say they take on a million tasks at once and they’re onto the next task before finishing the first one—which really means nothing ever gets done.

Our minds move a thousand miles per minute, and with the speed of technology, we’re not slowing down any time soon. The TV’s on, the radio’s blaring, the cell phone’s pinging with every new text, and Facebook’s open 24/7. Information is so readily accessible, it’s easy to get wrapped up in having to know it all. And after knowing it all, we try to do it all. An endless cycle that can go on forever as if we’re running on a hamster wheel.

This state of overthinking, overload and overwhelm is all too common.

We’re split and scattered between past, present and future, juggling roles and responsibilities. We’re caught up in regrets about yesterday and worries about tomorrow. It’s no wonder we struggle to fall asleep at night.

These are the effects of mental clutter. The head fog, the confusion, the chaos, the stress. And this “stuff” affects our environment. It leads to our messy desks, our overstocked cupboards, our overflowing closets and drawers.

So you want to start a meditation practice? Maybe you’ve tried it a couple times but didn’t stick to it. Maybe you dabbled in it once before but got discouraged thinking you weren’t doing it right.

Whatever the experience, you’re still curious about it and all the benefits it could bring into your life…if only you actually did it.

In order to start a meditation practice that will serve you, it helps to know the basics: where, when and how.

Good thing is, you can do it. Meditation is not just for hippies, Buddhists or “new-agey” vegans only. It’s for everyone, you and me.

Starting with confidence will encourage you to keep at it. And consistency is key.

Let’s break down the “Foundational 3” of a strong meditation practice.

With the end of another school year, spring moving summer, and the final push to be productive before the kids are home all day, the load can leave us drained of energy. All of it can feel pretty stressful.

It’s during these times of change when we have to take care of ourselves so the transition doesn’t wear us out.

Here are a few ways I like to reduce stress and find my calm.

I get it. You’re busy.

Too busy for friends and family let alone meditation and yoga. Too busy for a proper meal let alone mindfulness training. Too busy for a shower let alone 8 hours of sleep.

You probably feel like you don’t have enough time for much nowadays.

You don’t even know who’s running your schedule, you or your clients. You or your colleagues. You or your spouse. You or your kids. You or [insert everyone else ever].

Meanwhile, you’re frazzled, scatterbrained, overwhelmed…but still determined to get it all done.

So tell me this, out of all the hours in a day, how many of them are spent nurturing your mind? How many are spent catering to the health of your mind? How many are spent appreciating the miracle that is your mind?

Don’t have time for that, you say?

You don’t have time to not have time for that.

I’m here to tell you that no amount of money, success, accolades or fame will do for you what a clear, strong mind can do.
