Category: Financial Clutter

Debt–the other ugly four-letter word. It’s time to take a look at your finances and see where to declutter. Here are some questions and answers with Dawn Starks from SimpleMoney to help you on your path to debt elimination.

How do you define debt?

Debts come in all shapes and sizes. People like to characterize debts as “good debts” and “bad debts.” To me, no debt is good. But certainly, some debts are better than others, and knowing the difference can help you prioritize debt elimination.

You are where you are in life because of what you believe about abundance. You created the financial reality you’re experiencing now with your thoughts and beliefs.

Your mind got you here. And your mind can take you anywhere from here.

You probably say that you want to be rich, but is that your current situation? If your bank account doesn’t scream RICH, then there are money blocks you need to clear.

If you knew you could have all the money in the world, you wouldn’t refuse it. But because you set limits on what you’re capable of (for whatever reason), you put limits on what you can have.

That’s a money block.

You’d only say you don’t want millions because you’re scared to be humiliated when you don’t get it.

In other words, you don’t believe you can have it. That’s a scarcity mindset.

I decided my theme for the new year was Abundance. I wrote it on every mirror everywhere. I stuck a fortune-sized paper of it in my wallet. I adopted the mantra in my morning meditation, “I love money and money loves me.”

I was excited to trade in lack and limitation for abundance and prosperity. Finally! This was my year!

Not even the first week of March and I’m already falling into old patterns and scarcity thinking. This will never work. I can’t afford to xyz. I need to get a second job.

Even with the best intentions, I still struggle to maintain this new idea that I can live abundantly. It’s one thing to “know” I can, it’s another to live as though I can.

It is a new idea for me. I’m not around “money” every day. I wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. Both of my parents worked hard to create a middle-class existence for us 5 kids—and made sure we knew it.

All influences considered, my default (unconscious) state is that money is hard to come by. I have to work hard for my money. Money doesn’t come easily. A salary job is the only safety net.

Pretty limiting…and completely not true.

Are you doing too much? Cramming too much into those precious 24 hours of yours?

I believe you, you’re busy. But are you busy doing important work? Work that aligns with your priorities? Work that clearly leads to a desired result?

If not, try evaluating how you’re spending your time. You might think you’re being productive, when nothing’s really getting done.

At some point in your life, you learned busy is better. You learned being busy was the thing to do. You adopted the mindset that if you’re not filling every second with some activity, you’re not working hard enough.

But is working hard the driving factor in productivity? What if you were misled?

It’s not too late to redefine productivity.

Minimalism isn’t just about owning fewer possessions. It’s not the white walls, the sleek furniture, the tiny home.

Minimalism is a mindset. A way of simplifying your thinking and, subsequently, your behavior.

You can consider it a path to freedom. Freedom from fear, anxiety and worry. Freedom from overwhelm, overload and overcommitment. Freedom to do what you want, when you want, where you want, with who you want.

It amounts to fewer distractions, less on your plate, less clutter. It’s a lighter way of living.

If you’re peeking over the fence to see what’s on the other side, you’ve fallen prey to a clutter problem.

One of the symptoms of a cluttered mind is comparisons (see all 8 here). This one is a doozy. Pretty much a plague, comparing ourselves to someone else is like a disease, putting us at odds, making us feel less than, handicapped.

Comparisons amount to superlative judgments. It is deliberately taking two things and pitting them against each other for the sake of choosing a preference, or winner. It feels like judging two options to decide which is preferred.

It is searching for bigger and better, chasing faster and stronger.

We compare:

  • shoes
  • lunches
  • careers
  • salaries
  • bodies
  • lifestyles
  • houses
  • cars
  • families
  • friends
  • instagram fame
  • facebook likes
  • etc., etc.

We compare so much, where does that leave us? Feeling pretty shitty.

I love entrepreneurs. Their ability to build something from the ground up. Their impact on commerce and civic liberty.

The fire in their eyes, their unabated drive and determination are contagious. Their passion lights their way. There’s an excitement about the future that propels them forward.

I can’t help but get hopeful with them, wanting to see their big dreams become a reality.

So when I see a fellow entrepreneur struggle to find focus, drive and clarity in her business, it breaks my heart. I know without that, she won’t gain the momentum necessary to see the vision through. Without that, she’ll lose hope.

I immediately want to come to the rescue and offer guidance on how to remove the blocks.

When clarity eludes an entrepreneur, the fire goes out, the gusto fades. Discouragement and despair loom. Which is why we see so many businesses fail in their first 3 years. And why business partners disagree on vision and purpose. And why customers start shopping elsewhere.

It’s much better for the entrepreneur on the other side of confusion. It’s much better to be clear.

Have you lost vision and clarity for your business? Are you stuck in overwhelm and overload? Are you looking to get inspired again?

If so, below are 4 reasons–a.k.a. typical, widespread entrepreneur habits–you’re not experiencing clarity in your business right now.
